Yesterday a team of 17 from the Communications and Marketing Office spent the day volunteering at LionMouth Rural Centre. The group were split into three teams and set a range of tasks: continuing the bracken pulling which the Health and Safety department started, cutting down willow trees, and weeding the island and creating a willow fence on the island.
Everyone had just gotten started when the weather changed - the thunderstorm which was predicted made an appearance. At first the thunder and lightning made the atmosphere more exciting and a few drops of rain cooled everyone down, but in no time at all, the heavens opened and no shelter was going to help. Everyone trudged back to the centre to dry off - a perfect excuse for a cup of tea and some cake. The weather seemed to hold off for the rest of the day but soaking wet gloves were not ideal.
The team decided to do a 'pot luck' lunch where everyone brings a dish and it becomes a sort of picnic. Well, with 17 members, there was a lot of food! Obviously, it was to maintain energy levels.
All tasks rounded off mid-afternoon and the day concluded with everyone helping out at the fish pass with the willow fence. The team loved seeing the differences they made in a few hours - they clocked up 85 volunteering hours between them - an astonishing number.
