Hello! Happy New Year! Welcome back – it’s been a while!
We’ve been rather busy the last couple of months and unfortunately some
things had to give, the blog being one of them.
We’ve been busy bees behind the scenes during Term 1 and expanding our
repertoire – full break down of what’s new and what’s to come below – and we’ve done it all whilst staying
on target for another great year of volunteering.
Term 1 saw 18 Team Challenges – one more than last year – and saw an
increase in team sizes and volunteer hours. In fact, volunteer hours have
increased 66% in Term 1 for 2017/18 compared to Term 1 in 2016/17.
What’s New
Durham University has launched a Community Fund which has been set up
to provide grants to a range of charities and non-profit organisations that
staff and students already support through volunteering.
Since October, we’ve been organising volunteering days for the company 3M
in Newton Aycliffe. Just like the volunteering days we offer to the NHS BSA in
Newcastle, we find opportunities in Newton Aycliffe. So far, we’ve held two
successful volunteer days with the highlight being 25 staff overhauling a
community garden in Shildon in October!
November saw the department go through the reaccreditation process for
the Investing in Volunteers for Employers
(IiVE) Award. Thank you to all of the
staff who participated in the focus groups – we had a really good response.
Coming Up in 2018
ILM in Volunteering & Community Engagement
Volunteer Celebration Day
We’ll have separate blog posts on each of the above in the coming weeks
so keep an eye out for them!
For now, however, if you or your department are interested in
volunteering this term, please get in touch and we’ll happily arrange something
for you.
