Ditch Digging, Cemetery Clearing and Fruit Foraging... a day in the life of a Staff Volunteer

Access & SR help at RSPB

A gloriously warm, sunny day marking the end of September saw the Access and Student Recruitment team, suncream-clad, armed with interesting instruments called 'cromes', take to the drainage ditches at the RSPB reserve at Salthome and help clear them of unwanted weeds. It was a fantastic day with great results, showing how much a small team can get done with a bit of teamwork and manual labour. We managed to clear at least 30 metres of ditch from weeds and bulrushes, an impressive feat, which safe to say left the team fulfilled, but in need of a lie down!

Event Durham's Double

Within two weeks, Event Durham took part in two Team Challenges. The first was an afternoon spent with Friends of Stockton Road Cemetery, clearing logs and scrub and re-arranging in order to attract more minibeasts to this historical and wildlife haven. The next week saw the second annual fruit foraging day with Fruiful Durham which, despite high hopes, produced less than bounteous crops of apples, but substantial amounts of crabapples and rosehips. Great fun was had by all, weilding the Apple Pickers in the Vice Chancelllor's garden!

Coming up...

Open Team Challenges galore! With Christmas approaching fast, on the 27th November all staff are invited to a drop-in Christmas Cards crafts session for local charities, held in the Pennington Suite at Grey College from 10am-4pm. If you have a spare few hours and would like to come along, it would be great to see as many people as possible. Please contact the SVO Team for more information.

New partner RT Projects, based in Gilesgate, would like to show Durham University Staff what they are all about. They are offering a chance for staff volunteers to attend an interactive arts for mental health workshop, where they can create something to take away, combined with an afternoon of odd-job volunteering at their base. Contact the SVO Team if you would like to take part.
